Work is underway on the Causeway Upgrade Project in New Zealand. The US$183.3 million (NZ$220 million) contract was awarded by the 1009 New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA). The route forms part of State Highway 16, with the fork being part of Auckland's Western Ring Route. The contract was awarded to the Causeway Alliance, a consortium made up of 1397 AECOM, Coffey Geotechnics, 6191 Fulton Hogan, 2685 Leighton Contractors, 1524 Sinclair Knight Merz and the NZTA.

The project will help transport connections between Auckland and Northland and Waikato. Once complete the work will provide direct highway access between Auckland’s central business district and the international airport. The work will also provide a less congested route for commuters and freight traffic.

An important feature of the work is a measure to prevent flooding issues, by raising the causeway a height of 1.5m. The route will also be widened, with additional lanes being constructed. The work is due for completion in late 2016.
