A road bridge has collapsed in northern Italy, though luckily without causing any fatalities. The 260m bridge is located on the outskirts of the town of Aulla, in Tuscany and two drivers were injured when it collapsed.

The local authorities had complained about the high number of heavy trucks using the bridge in recent months. Traffic volumes had increased following the collapse last year of the Morandi Bridge in Genoa, with truck drivers seeking alternative routes.

The bridge spans the Magra River, with the route being managed by the state-owned firm Anas. The bridge suffered from cracking last year and was closed temporarily. However after an inspection, it was then reopened.

Questions remain over the poor state of many bridges in Italy following this latest collapse.
