A tunnel is to be built between the Belgrade city areas of Savska and Dunavska Padina at a cost between €100-130 million, according to the mayor.

Project design was done Ces Cowi which was awarded a tender worth nearly €198,000 by the Directorate for Construction Land.

The 9.6m-wide tunnel will be nearly 2km long and lay around 38m below ground.

Work, however, is not expected to start until the end of 2018 and take around 30 months.

Meanwhile, work on the 470m Zezeljev Bridge across the Danube River in Novi Sad and access roads is set to start. The bridge, to carry both road and rail lines replaces a similar structure that was destroyed by NATO bombing in 1999. Construction of the new bridge forms part of an EU strategy for the Danube Region.

The replacement project was delayed initially by subsurface wreckage from the old structure, which had to be removed.

Major advances in tunnelling will allow cars to travel underneath the Bosphorus sea channel in Turkey's Istanbul next year when its third road link is opened, writes Adrian Greeman. The Bosphorus is redolent with history and strategic significance. As one of the world's most significant sea connections, linking the landlocked Black Sea to the Marmara Sea and the Mediterranean beyond, it has been vitally important for trade and crucial for military access. It is also one of the biggest obstacles for land tra
