Bangladesh building big bridges

Work is moving ahead in Bangladesh on a series of key bridge projects. The country’s largest infrastructure project is for the US$2.96 billion Padma Bridge, which is underway currently. Work is moving ahead in Bangladesh on a series of key bridge projects. The country’s largest infrastructure project is for the US$2.96 billion Padma Bridge, which is underway currently. The team working on the project will source a high percentage of construction materials locally. The Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) has said that local firms will get business worth from $257.4-$386.1 million. Local firms are supplying cement and sand, although they are only supplying reinforcing steel and not structural steel.

Meanwhile tendering is underway for the work to build three bridges on the highway connecting Chittagong and Dhaka. The country’s Roads and Highways Department said that the $1.09 billion tender also includes work to repair f the existing Kanchpur, Meghna and Meghna-Gumti bridges. These were revealed to be unfit for traffic in 2011. Five consultants have carried out the detailed design and groundwork for the new bridges. The tenders should be submitted by the 28th April 2015, while the Roads and Highways Department intends to award the contract by November 2015.
