Australia tunnel project faces dispute

A major tunnel project in Australia is facing a serious delay due to slow progress between the construction firms and construction unions. The US$4.73 billion (A$6.7 billion) project for the West Gate Tunnel will provide an imporoved link between the West Gate Freeway and the CityLink, reducing congestion and cutting journey times for drivers.

A major tunnel project in Australia is facing a serious delay due to slow progress between the construction firms and construction unions. The US$4.73 billion (A$6.7 billion) project for the West Gate Tunnel will provide an imporoved link between the West Gate Freeway and the CityLink, reducing congestion and cutting journey times for drivers. However the construction firms and construction unions have been in dispute over the issue of working conditions and rest days. How great a delay this will result in for the project is not clear.

    The Australian project to build the East West Link in Melbourne, Victoria State now looks to be revived. Financing worth US$2.82 billion (A$4 billion) is being provided by the Australian Federal Government. The project is expected to cost $4.93 billion (A$7 billion) in all. The TBMs weigh 4,000tonnes each and will be called Vida and Bella, in honour of suffragette and social reformer Vida Goldstein, and the first woman to graduate from an Australian university, Bella Guerin. The machines will start work shortly on the West Gate Tunnel project. The new tunnel link will provide an alternative for drivers to the West Gate Bridge and will help reduce congestion and travel times for drivers.

    A new twin tube tunnel in Mexico City will help reduce the city’s chronic congestion problem, which is particularly acute at peak travel periods. The tunnel is located at Mixcoac in the south west of the city and should be ready by August 2017. The new twin bore tunnel link will reduce traffic jams on the city’s Circuito Interior urban highway, which handles up to 300,000 vehicles/hour at peak travel periods. Mexico City’s traffic jams are notorious and journey times can be infuriatingly long at times.
