Highways England and Amey Sir Robert McAlpine (AmeySRM) have signed a contract for construction of a new A533 Expressway Bridge replacement in the UK.

Under the €23 million contract work will start in spring 2021 for completion in summer 2022.

The existing 70m span bridge carries the A533 Expressway over the M56 motorway in the northwest of England. But it has reached the end of its life, according to AmeySRM, a cooperation between contractors Amey and Sir Robert McAlpine.

The  two-span replacement will be constructed adjacent to the existing bridge and have much improved cycling and pedestrian facilities, noted Robert Allen, framework partnership director for AmeySRM. “This scheme is one of a number of comprehensive upgrades our collaborative approach as AmeySRM is delivering across the northwest, creating better journeys for those using the network,” said Allen.

To ensure that the works cause minimal disruption, the main concrete bridge deck will be assembled off site in a nearby compound then transported and lowered into its final position using a self-propelled modular transporter. Once the new bridge is open to traffic, the existing structure will be demolished and the area fully reinstated.

AmeySRM is already involved in a €47.3 million overhaul of junction 19 of the M6 motorway near Rugby in central England. Work includes construction of a new bridge through the existing roundabout and over the M6, creating a better flow between the motorway and the A556 highway. AmeySRM was awarded the scheme by Highways England and is one of 13 companies – known as Delivery Integration Partners – which are now working on 18 projects.

Amey is part of the services division of Spanish global infrastructure group Ferrovial.
