Algeria’s East-West highway nearing completion

Work on Algeria’s long running East-West highway project should be complete by mid-October 2015. The Algerian Ministry for Public Works, has said that the final 120km of road should be ready by mid-October at the latest. This will be the last section of the final stretch of the 1,200km East-West highway to open to traffic. Work on Algeria’s long running East-West highway project should be complete by mid-October 2015. The Algerian Ministry for Public Works, has said that the final 120km of road should be ready by mid-October at the latest. This will be the last section of the final stretch of the 1,200km East-West highway to open to traffic. A number of delays have hit work on some sections of the highways due to issues such as technical problems and disputes with contractors. The East-West highway is of major importance for Algeria and for North Africa as a whole. This forms part of the newly improved highway running from Morocco through to Egypt and which will be a vital route for trade and economic development for the region.

    Algeria has made significant progress with rebuilding its road system, boosting its network and adding extra capacity. Since 1999, 23,000 km of roads, including 1,200 km of highways, have been built in the country. The Ministry of Public Works said that work on a further 1,200 km of highways will be launched shortly.
