Algeria is investing in more highway infrastructure

Algeria’s Public Works Ministry has announced it plans to build new expressway connections to the country’s East-West highway. Algeria’s Public Works Ministry has announced it plans to build new expressway connections to the country’s East-West highway. These expressways will link the Algeria’s ports to the East-West highway, with the aim of reducing congestion and improving traffic flow. A US$373 million expressway measuring 30km long will link the port of Skikda with the East-West highway, with construction work due to start in September 2013. Larger still, a 111km highway will be built linking Djendjen port to Algeria’s East-West highway through El-Eulma. This $2 billion project will take three years to complete and will be handled by a consortium comprising Algerian and Italian companies; 975 Rizzani De Eccher, EPE/SPA, ETRHB Haddad, and SAPTA. Algeria’s Jijel Province looks set to benefit from other infrastructure projects aimed at boosting the local economy. Another of the key projects is for the construction of a 60km highway that will link El Milia and Didouche Mourad, improving transport connections to the east of the country. Meanwhile $124.7 million will be used to widen the RN7 road that connects Maghnia and Marsat Ben M'hidi, with the tender process due to start soon. The project is intended to reduce accidents along the route by addressing safety issues crash hot spots, as well as improving traffic flow on the road. And $62.4 million has been set aside to build a 58km coastal road linking Ghazaouet and Marsat Ben Mhidi. The project will be carried out in four sections and different contractors will handle each stretch.
