Fans from elta provide fresh air into the uK's new Hindhead tunnel

Elta Fans supplied specialist ventilaton fans for the A3 Hindhead Tunnel in Surrey, UK which opened in July this year.

The A3, which previously ran around the Devil's Punch Bowl, a local beauty spot, now runs right under it in a 2km tunnel built by main contractor 1146 Balfour Beatty.

Ventilation contractor James Paget Services installed two sets of long-cased axial fans from Elta with matching stainless steel ancillaries to ventilate the void in the low-point sump. Each fan works for 12 hours, switches to standby for 12 hours, and then operates in the opposite direction.

The order also included four bifurcated, cylindrically cased ATEX axial fans with matching ancillaries. The bifurcated fans have been developed for handling hostile conditions of hot, dust-laden air, corrosive fumes or gases and are designed so that the gases bypass the motor.
