New Arizona freeway project commencing

A new freeway project is planned in Phoenix, Arizona. The joint venture for this design-build and maintain project will be led by Fluor Corporation. The package of works was awarded by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) and is for the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway. This freeway project will be the first procured under Arizona’s public-private-partnership statute.

A new freeway project is planned in Phoenix, Arizona. The joint venture for this design-build and maintain project will be led by 6343 Fluor Corporation. The package of works was awarded by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) and is for the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway. This freeway project will be the first procured under Arizona’s public-private-partnership statute. It will also be ADOT’s first design-build-maintain project as well as being the largest highway project in the state’s history. Fluor will book this project in the first quarter of 2016. The project is funded by a combination of Regional Area Road Fund revenues, Highway User Revenue Fund revenues and federal funds dedicated to the Maricopa County region and ADOT. ADOT will fund the project’s capital costs with a combination of available public funds from sales tax revenues and tax-exempt bonds.

The joint venture, Connect 202 Partners, is a design-build and maintenance partnership comprising Fluor Enterprises, 1007 Granite Construction, 7036 Ames Construction, 2693 Parsons Brinckerhoff as lead designer, and DBi Services, as the joint maintenance partner. Fluor and DBi Services will maintain the lanes for 30 years with oversight from ADOT.

When complete, the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway Project will deliver 35km of improved mobility with four lanes in each direction. Three will be lanes for general use and one will be an HOV lane. The project will also feature includes rubberised asphalt. Major construction is expected to begin in 2016 with the lanes opening in early 2020.
