Topcon's sophisticated blade control package
342 Topcon Positioning Group has launched a 3D dozer machine control system, the 3D-MCMAX, for 178 Caterpillar machines.

The system is designed to let operators work confidently in rough or fine grade applications, slope conditions, and in restricted sight environments without the visual obstruction of masts or risks to hanging cables.

Gone is the need for daily installation and removal of antenna, cables and mast; the operator just climbs on and gets to work. Downtime is minimised, said Jamie Williamson, executive vice president and general manager of the Topcon Precision Automation Group. “It provides high-accuracy elevation, slope, and blade rotation sensing in an integrated configuration resulting in maximum speed, maximum control and maximum grading performance.”

It uses Topcon 3D-MC2 technology with the dual IMU (inertial measurement unit) sensors and algorithms located with the sensitive GNSS technology safely inside the cab instead of out on the harsh environment of the blade. There is no need for a mast.

The grader market may be comparatively small but it is still fiercely fought and while Caterpillar holds a strong market share worldwide, other firms are also increasing their presence in the sector. John Deere hopes to capitalise on its share by installing the new G-series graders with the firm’s PowerTech, Tier 4 Final compliant engines. The engine update has also allowed engineers to install a number of other upgrades. The G-Series still includes 12 models, with power ranging from 164-214kW and six o

Located in northern Iceland, Akureyri is the fourth largest town in the country, with a modest population of 19,000. The town is home to one of Iceland’s oldest car racing clubs, the Akureyri Car Club, which runs regular drag racing events. However, its popularity resulted in heavy wear and tear, which meant the quarter-of-a-mile drag race strip was in urgent need of an upgrade.

3D machine controls can optimise milling efficiency, Mike Woof reports. More efficient milling and recycling operations can be carried out by using the latest 3D control systems on the market. At the last Trimble Dimensions event in Las Vegas, the advantages of 3D controls for milling operations proved a key topic. The use of 3D control systems can offer huge advantages in milling operations. This technology helps increase productivity as the milling machine will only remove what is required, which also hel
