Trimble and Radiodetection have established a collaboration to develop better digital maps of underground utilities

Trimble and Radiodetection have established a collaboration to improve the technology used in the utility measurement and mapping process. Through the integration of the Trimble Catalyst DA2 GNSS system and Radiodetection’s RD MapTM+ application and precision locator products, the software and hardware integration streamlines utility-locating workflows. This can provide high-accuracy measurement capabilities for the generation of underground utilities maps in a single field operation.

Traditionally, field technicians mark their measurements onsite manually or rely on data entries to provide to office staff for map creation after a site visit. Data collected with the Trimble Catalyst DA2 GNSS system can now be synced with Radiodetection RD Map+ and precision locators that find and mark buried utilities. By streamlining this connection, workers can digitise utility-line locations and reduce costly reporting errors.

This integration advances utility measurement workflows by giving personnel the capability to accurately represent the utility asset in a digital format. This streamlines the operation, maintenance and construction process whenever utilities are involved.

Topcon Positioning System’s new RD-M2 laser scanner has been purpose-built for road resurfacing applications.

The vehicle-mounted downward-facing RD-M2 delivers precise surface conditions over long and complex roads, which means no road closures are needed.

Millions of points are collected by the vehicle operator from safety of his or her cab.

The 3D point data from the RD-M2 scanner serves as the basis for detailed road surface designs using the Topcon Office Suite.

These ground-truth surfaces are a part of the company’s SmoothRide system workflow.

  • Developments in tolling technology
    February 27, 2012
Jason Barnes reviews the last few decades and the future of tolling technology. Tolling and charging technology has evolved significantly over the last three decades and that evolution is perhaps best illustrated by reductions in or complete removal of impedances to physical progress. Once, it was customary for a driver to pull up to a barrier, make some form of cash payment to a human operative in a booth, and then wait for the barrier to be raised before proceeding. Humans were eventually complemented and
