4019 Bentley Systems is introducing a range of new software upgrades and solutions, while also expanding operations with key partnerships and acquisitions. Improved data flow between separate software tools has been an important driver for the latest developments from Bentley. The new CONNECT edition application portfolio is said to provides a more comprehensive modelling environment for infrastructure. Data can be moved more easily from one part of the project delivery stage to another, allowing more efficient design and construction for all types of projects.

Bentley has partnered with 342 Topcon and also with 1134 Siemens. The former is helping deliver a more seamless flow of data from the design office to the work site, and back again. The latter meanwhile is crucial in developing digital workflows and smart cities.

The key acquisition is for Action Modulers, a Lisbon-based business focussing on water modelling software. This deal comes at a time when flooding due to severe weather has hit the news worldwide and the software solutions include tools for dealing with weather and flooding issues, as well as developing more efficient drainage systems.

Modern software is stretching traditional design boundaries on a motorway widening in the Netherlands, reports Adrian Greeman There was a time when civil engineering and aesthetics did not mix too well, especially on roads. The artistic ideas of an architect did not blend with the stringent requirements of structure. But modern three-dimensional modelling software is helping this change. Design notions that might have been overly complicated in the past are now attainable with hi-tech analysis tools.

Safety barriers provide an invaluable service for all road users, Mike Woof reports The safety barrier market is a key one for the highway sector, with systems providing valuable protection for all categories of road users. The importance of passive protective devices such as safety barriers can often be overlooked by the road user but is well-understood by highway designers. Redirecting an errant vehicle back into the roadway and preventing it from crossing into traffic flowing in the other direction or fr
