Software specialist 4019 Bentley Systems continues to add to its portfolio with the acquisition of the SpecWave software, on of a series of moves by the company. This follows on from its recent alliance with GPS pioneer 2122 Trimble and underlines Bentley’s strategic plan for expansion in the field of specialist software for industry. The company plans to continue along this path, having achieved notable successes and CEO Greg Bentley said, “One of our highlights in 2011 was our growth in Asia.”

A key portion of the company’s philosophy lies with information mobility at work and Bentley said that this provides a strong return on investment. He also said that BIM for infrastructure offers huge potential, though he cautioned, “The return on investment on BIM depends on the expertise level.”

SpecWave was a start-up firm that received funding from Bentley Systems, which has now opted to add the company to its portfolio. The SpecWave package is designed to allow users to configure structured text, such as engineering specifications, codes and standards. By using the SpecWave product, designers and engineers can now create text objects that can be managed within the Bentley eB Insight package. This allows users to deliver documents that are controlled and connected as a project is delivered and then progresses into its working life, saving time while improving quality. This program forms part of the Bentley CONNECT SaaS environment, which is designed to connect engineers and clients and share information across different disciplines and teams. The key emphasis is on information mobility and ensuring that all those involved in a project have access to the latest and most accurate data. This can prevent data being overlooked or ignored, and can improve efficiency, while even historical information can become extremely important as it allows a longer term view.

The company is planning on expanding its Bentley CONNECT capabilities and will add the Connection Space and Simulation Service tools, as well as developing the AssetWise lifecycle information management services.

Specifications and other documents are crucial for projects right from design through to asset management and being able to configure these into the software is of key importance, according to Bhupinder Singh, senior vice president of Bentley Systems.

Singh said, “Integral constituent parts of documents can now be harvested, persisted, accessed, repurposed, change-managed and controlled, with text objects becoming a new fundamental data type for Bentley.”
