VIDEO: Road safety advertisements – you laugh, you cry

Governments, police forces and parent groups have use various messages to warn the public about dangerous driving and some have been more effective than others.


Two recent examples – one from New Zealand and one from Australia – make their point in different ways. The New Zealand video - ‘don’t use a mobile phone while driving’ – gets the message across with gentle humour.

The Australian video – ‘don’t drink and drive’ – employs intense drama to ensure a mark is left on the viewer.

But be warned, though. The Australian video, 5 minutes of it, is chilling and compelling in equal measure. It contains brutal scenes accompanied by the strains of Everybody Hurts, by the American rock group R.E.M.

  • VIDEO: Kangaroo takes out cyclist down under

    It caught all the cyclists by surprise when a young bounding kangaroo decided to hurl itself at the peloton during a bicycle race in Australia. A fellow racer trailing behind took the video. The targeted cyclist was severely bruised from hitting the deck and he needed stitches. But the marauding kangaroo apparently died from its injuries when it slammed into the bike at a right angle.     Nothing lasts forever, including – and perhaps especially – highways. One fine example of this is a 21km section of the original 580km Pennsylvania Turnpike in the US state of Pennsylvania.
