VIDEO: Demolition starts to remove Kendray Bridge in Barnsley, UK

Demolition work has started of a 30-year-old bridge in the UK town of Barnsley in preparation for a €58 million revamp of the town centre.

Kendray Street Bridge is the first structure to be knocked down to allow for the redevelopment, which includes a new town square, library and a refurbished market.

    A successful explosive bridge demolition job has been carried out in the US State of Kentucky. After a short delay, demolition specialists managed to remove the old Eggners Ferry Bridge successfully and without incident. The explosives broke up the four middle spans of the structure. The demolition job was not without its challenges, with concern over the presence of nesting ospreys on the structure. Demolition personnel had to keep a distance of 90m from the nesting area, which delayed preparations.

    Locals turned out in large numbers to watch the demolition of a redundant bridge in West Virginia on the east coast of the US. The 65 year old bridge located near the town of Lilly was removed by a specialist demolition crew following careful preparations. The area now has a new bridge as the old steel cantilever truss structure was no longer able to cope with local traffic needs. The remains of the old bridge, one of the last cantilever steel structures in the state, are now being cut up for scrap.
