UK police carry out spot checks on suspect vehicles

UK officers from Dyfed-Powys Police in Wales recently carried out vehicle checks on a Saturday evening shift. The focus for these checks were on enforcement of drink drive legislation and the officers stopped a number of other vehicles during the evening.

By midnight the officers had conducted more than 85 breath tests. There was only one positive test, provided by a male driver who blew a reading of 85 (the alcohol/breath limit in England and Wales is 35).

The officers conducted other relevant checks on vehicles and occupants during the evening. A number of vehicles showed without insurance, while three people were reported for drug offences and a firearms search was carried out on one of the uninsured vehicles.

    One in every 100 people in the UK with a full driving licence has points for driving uninsured, according to a “shocking” Freedom of Information (FOI) request by the IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists). For all ages the request, directed to the DVLA, revealed that one in every 200 people with a full UK driving licence had been penalised for driving without insurance. A total of 226,803 drivers in the UK were said under FOI to have points on their licence for driving while uninsured.
