Machine control technologies are revolutionising construction – Dan Gilkes writes Electronic control of engines, transmissions and hydraulic systems, primarily to reduce exhaust emissions and boost productivity, is also providing manufacturers with an opportunity to incorporate increasingly complex machine control into their equipment. This in turn has the potential to make the machinery more productive, further cutting fuel consumption as part of a virtuous operational circle.
Komatsu Europe claims that its new WA470-8 wheel loader offers higher output and lower emissions than the model it replaces. Power comes from a Tier 4 Final/Stage IV engine and its fuel consumption is up to 8 % lower than for the WA470-7. The new model retains the proven durability and reliability of the earlier model but also offers improved stability, breakout power and tractive effort. Productivity is improved while fuel consumption has been reduced by up to 8%.

Benninghoven has built an asphalt plant specially to order for a customer in Norway. Contractor Veidekke had a tight timeframe in which the plant could be erected at the firm’s chosen site in Sörli, as well as specific requirements as to its configuration. Benninghoven was able to construct the special TBA 4000 UC asphalt mixing plant to the firm’s request. A notable feature of the plant is that its large capacity materials towers stand 33m high.
