Today’s highways require high performance materials, and this means rigorous testing as Patrick Smith reports Highways are under greater pressure than ever today and asphalts have to grant high performances in order to withstand traffic and meet the standards. Studying the plastic permanent deformations in hot mix asphalt (HMA) is very important to obtain useful information for mix designers as an appropriate mix design will reduce the formation of unevenness on road surface. Innovative asphalt compaction machines are now being introduced by several of the major manufacturers, with solutions offering improved working efficiency and performance.
Three of the most innovative developments for asphalt rollers come from Dynapac, BOMAG and Hamm, although new asphalt compactors are also being introduced by other firms such as Ammann and Caterpillar.
Compaction specialist Hamm has launched a 10 tonne H series soil compactor and updated its 12 and 14 tonne models with new engines and operating systems. The H10i compactor is powered by an 85kW diesel engine and can be specified with smooth or padfoot drums. All H series machines come with three-point pivot articulation, to maximise drive on rough ground and feature the company’s Easy Drive operating concept, with ergonomic work stations and improved visibility.
