  • Transylvania Motorway: route to prosperity

    Work is progressing apace on the biggest infrastructure project in Europe, the Transylvania Motorway or Autostrada Transilvania (A3) in Romania, with completion scheduled for 2013. The four-lane, 415km motorway, stretching northwest from Brasov in central Romania, at an altitude of nearly 600m, will reach the country's northwestern border with Hungary at Oradea in Câmpia Crisanei at 130m above sea level, and will connect the cities of Brasov, Fagaras, Sighisoara, Târgu Mures, Cluj-Napoca, Zalau and Oradea.

    In Russian capital Moscow the Department for Transport and Road Infrastructure has prepared a draft ordinance restricting heavy truck transport in hot weather. The document is introducing temporary traffic limitations for the transportation of heavy cargo. The restrictions apply to asphalt-concrete roads during 15th June – 15th August and applies when ambient temperatures top 32° C. The restrictions are not expected to last for more than 30 days.     The wealth of experiences and ideas shared during the recent 4th IRF Caribbean Regional Congress underscored the International Road Federation’s value in shaping policy contributions to global transportation challenges ranging from resilient infrastructure to road safety. The regional congress coincided with the start of the 3rd United Nations Global Road Safety Week, an initiative aimed at fostering discussion and awareness-raising in more than 100 countries.
