Explosive demolition works for US Bridge

A successful explosive demolition project for an old bridge has been carried out in the US state of Missouri. The Fairfax Bridge was constructed in 1935 and was no longer able to meet current transportation needs. Some 760m long the bridge was carrying around 6,000 vehicles/day. Another bridge was also opened nearby, the Platte Purchase Bridge, in 1957 to help the original structure carry the necessary traffic volumes. Removing the old structure of the Fairfax Bridge as well as the Platte Purchase Bridge and replacing them with a new bridge is costing around US$79 million. The new bridge will open to traffic in late 2016.

    Two Italian contractors will handle a bridge project in Botswana. The US$93 million project will be carried out by a joint venture comprising the construction firm Cimolai and Itinera.     The first stage of a controversial Russian bridge project is now complete, with the link having been opened to use by cars and buses. The Kerch Strait bridge spans the Black Sea, connecting Russia’s Taman Peninsula in Krasnodar with Crimea, the latter having been controversially annexed by Russia from Ukraine in 2014. The official opening of the 19km-long bridge was carried out by Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, who drove across the link in a Russian-manufactured Kamaz truck to reach the city of Kerch.
