Cummins has revealed its latest engine platform to cover the 37-55kW sector. Called the QSF2.8, the new four-cylinder platform is the smallest engine from Cummins to use full-authority electronic controls for high-pressure common rail injection. The 2.8litre engine is available in naturally aspirated (37kW) and turbocharged (55kW) packages, and has been developed as a global engine platform.

The year 2011 was the most successful year in Cummins’ history, according to Hugh Foden, executive director of Cummins off-highway business.“We achieved sales of $18bn, split 50:50 between off- and on-highway sectors,” he said. “Growth in the construction equipment sector is very important to us and we now power more OEMs than ever before.

Perkins used INTERMAT to reveal its six-cylinder solution to meet US EPA Tier 4 Final/EU Stage IV emissions regulations due in 2014. Top of the six-cylinder range is the twin turbo, 1206F-E70TTA – a 7litre engine capable of producing up to 225kW. Key to the engine’s cleanliness is a revised emissions module that now adds an SCR system to the existing DOC and DPF elements, but without increasing its physical size.

Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) is evaluating demand for its ZH200 Hybrid excavator in Europe. The 20 tonne excavator, which is already sold in Japan, uses a hydraulic/electric swing motor to generate electrical power under braking, which is stored in a capacitor alongside the machine’s cooling pack. The electrical power is used to boost slew speed and also feeds a secondary hydraulic motor, to assist the diesel engine when there is a demand for hydraulic power.

Lombardini, part of the Kohler Group, used INTERMAT to reveal its latest KDI engine series that meets forthcoming emissions regulations without the need for a diesel particulate filter. The KDI series – Kohler Direct Injection – currently includes a 1.9-litre three-cylinder, and four-cylinder 2.5litre engines. A larger 3.4litre engine will follow. Under the terms of the deal, Volvo Penta and Sandvik Mining and Construction have an agreement intended to boost the long-term competitiveness of Sandvik products. With rapid advances in technology and emission legislation, not only the choice of technology but also the choice of engine supplier has become an important issue for equipment manufacturers for the construction industry.

Scania and the South Korean equipment manufacturer Doosan Infracore have agreed to further increase their current co-operation. According to a Letter of Intent, from 2014 Scania will not only supply engines for Doosan’s articulated dump trucks and large wheel loaders, but also other products within the Doosan range. “In the long term we are estimating delivery of well over 3,000 engines annually to Doosan Infracore. This co-operation has strengthened our position in the growing Asian market,” said Robert So

John Deere Power Systems unveiled its solution for EU Stage IV emissions regulations at INTERMAT. It saw the company introduce an SCR catalyst and diesel exhaust fluid dosing unit to its Stage IIIb engine platforms from 56-560kW. “SCR was not our preferred technology path but it has proved to be the best way for us to maintain particulate levels while reducing NOx to meet EU Stage IV emissions regulations,” explained Xavier Adam, market planning manager for John Deere Power Systems.
