A new highway project worth US$184 million has been awarded in Myanmar to a joint venture comprising Punj Lloyd and Varaha Infrastructure. The project will see the construction of an improved road link measuring 120km connecting Yagyi with Kalewa. The work is expected to take three years to complete and will include the construction of three large bridges as well as two small bridges.

Research from Spain suggests that tougher enforcement of vehicle speed can help cut crashes and road casualties. This follows the analysis of data collated by Spain’s Civil Guard between 2006 and 2015. Bulgaria has started work on a 12.6km section of Struma motorway between the southwestern towns of Blagoevgrad and Krupnik. A consortium led by Bulgarian construction company Agromah is building the section under a contract worth just over €71 million, according to the regional development ministry.

Bosnia has picked up a €221 million loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction to finance two road projects, including a Corridor Vc section. Up to €65 million of the a €221 million will be for flood damage repairs.

A quarry producer in Iceland is now benefiting from new technology from Volvo CE. The firm is quarrying volcanic basalt at a site not far from Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik. Located around 10km to the south of Reykjavik, just outside the small town of Hafnarfjörður, is a large open quarry called Vatnsskarðsnámur. The quarry is owned by Alexander Ólafsson, a contracting company that specialises in crushing and screening.

The Ethiopian Government has set out plans for a major programme of road development work to expand the country’s network. In all 58 road projects are being planned, with the programme having been set out by the Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA). The plans call for 3,171km of roads to be built in all. These will be constructed in Tigray, Oromia and Amhara, with work commencing shortly and expected to take three years to complete. A report by Off-Highway Research suggests that worldwide construction machine sales could increase 16% this year. On a global basis, sales of construction machines are expected to exceed 810,000 units in 2017, with a value of more than US$80 billion. The report says that most major territories will see growth during 2017. However China’s resurgence will be crucial, as crawler excavator sales in the country have more than doubled in the first half of 2017, compared to the same period last year.
