Funding is being provided for our projects that form part of Colombia’s 4G road development programme. The Inter-American Development Bank Group’s private sector subsidiary, IDB Invest, is supplying close to US$207 million for the four road projects to the development firms handling the works. IDB Invest is in turn borrowing the sum from Colombia’s national development bank Financiera de Desarrollo Nacional (FDN). In all Colombia’s 4G programme calls for $18 billion of construction works to be carried out.

Construction of a US$7.17 billion (A$9 billion) highway in New South Wales, Australia will require the demolition of up to 100 homes to prepare the route. The properties that will have to be demolished have a combined value of some $318.62 million (A$400 million), with owners having to be paid the necessary compensation. The 23km route will extend the existing M1 Princes Motorway. Construction of the tolled route will help reduce congestion in southern Sydney.

Construction work on Algeria’s East-West Highway project is finally drawing to a close.

Road improvements in Nicaragua will now be paid for through a loan from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI). The US$238 million loan will fund a series of upgrades to a total of 194km of key road connections in the country. A further $5 million of funding is being provided by the Nicaraguan Government. The work will form the country’s seventh programme for road improvements will commence in 2018 with six separate projects being carried out.

Construction delays are holding up the opening of a new bypass in northern Germany that will connect the towns of Löhne and Bad Oeynhausen. Construction work on the link commenced in 2008 and has so far cost some €170 million. In all the project is expected to cost €208 million to complete. Although the vast majority of the work has been carried out on the new bypass some finishing works remain to be completed.

The tender process for the Msikaba Bridge project in South Africa is now being reopened. This is being handled by the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral). The project is costing US$128.25 million and involves the construction of a 580m long suspension bridge. The structure will span the Msikaba River and will be located around 23km to the east of the town of Lusikisiki. Once complete this will be the longest suspension bridge in South Africa. Tanzania’s road network is becoming safer according to the latest official figures. Information from Tanzania's Police Traffic Department shows that the number of crashes from July to September 2017 was 48% lower than for the same period in 2016. There were just 1,264 crashes in this time in 2017 compared with 2,639 in 2016. With fewer crashes it follows that deaths and injuries have also seen a reduction of 32% and 40% respectively.

A series of PPP projects are being planned in Paraguay to develop the highway network. Upgrade work will be carried out on Ruta 2 and Ruta 7. In all the work is costing US$527 million and is being overseen by Paraguay’s Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC). A consortium, Consorcio Rutas del Este, will carry out the contract which includes resurfacing Ruta 2 and Ruta 7, as well as improving key intersections and carrying out widening work. Construction work is commencing on a key contract in Malaysia to build a new bridge. The US$106.4 million project is being handled by the contractor Naza EC and is for the construction of the 1.5km long Bagan Datuk Bridge, as well as an 8.7km long link road. The work is intended to improve transport connections between Malaysia’s Bagan Datuk, Perak Tengah, and Manjung districts. Once complete, the new link will reduce journey times for drivers from one hour at present to just 15 minutes.

German engine firm Deutz is reporting strong financial performance for the first nine months of 2017. The latest results reveal a marked increase in new orders, revenue and EBIT and a significant improvement in free cash flow. The firm also believes it is well positioned for the future as its E-Deutz strategy has been accelerated by the recent acquisition of Torqeedo. The firm says that new orders rose by 25.5% to reach €1,173.8 million, compared with €935.3 million for the same period in 2016.
