Expressways upgrades for key UK routes

Key routes in England are to be upgraded as part of a programme of works worth a mighty €33.9 billion (£30 billion) plan from 2020 to 2025. This five year plan from Highways England will see many of the major A road routes being reclassified as A(M) expressways. Hungary dual carriageway project planned

A new highway project is being planned in Hungary. The project calls for the construction of a new section of the M44 dual carriageway. The proposed section would link Lakitelek with Tiszakurt, measuring 10km. The construction of this section will include building two major intersections as well as a 556m long bridge spanning the Tisza River. Safer roads in Germany during 2017

Germany’s roads have seen an overall reduction in traffic-related fatalities during 2017. The figures from the official body Destatis reveal a drop of 1% for road deaths in 2017, compared with 2016. With road deaths expected at around 3,170 for 2017 (final figures are still being compiled), this represents a significant drop from the 4,009 killed on Germany’s roads in 2011. The Sultanate of Oman has produced a guide for road design and standardisation of roads and bridges in the Persian Gulf of state. The Times of Oman reported that the four-volume guide was launched by Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Futaisi, minister of transport and communications. New Finnish tunnel project in Lahti

A tunnel project is being planned in the Finnish city of Lahti. The tunnel section will form part of the Lahti Ring Road. The project is being carried out by the VALTARI consortium, which was set up to construct the Lahti stretch of the City of Lahti's new Southern Ring Road on Main Road 12 in Finland. As well as the Lahti Southern Ring Road on Main Road 12, the project includes the improvement of the south access road on highway 167.
Redesign for New Zealand link likely due to landslide risk

Plans for New Zealand’s US$188.7 million (NZ$270 million) Petone-Grenada road connection are now being revised due to concerns over the risk of landslides. In addition, the redesign will address concerns about the high costs of the new route, which was originally proposed with two lanes in either direction as a connection between Wellington. Colombia bridge connection completion

A key bridge connection project has now been completed in Colombia. The work forms part of the construction activity on the Magangue to La Bodega route. The new link connects the 1km long Santa Lucia Bridge with the 2.3km long Roncador Bridge, the latter being the longest bridge in Colombia and the fifth longest in Latin America.
Road safety event being run in Scotland

A one day road safety event will be held in the Scottish town of Stirling on April 9th, 2018. Called; Safer roads, Safer vehicles, Safer road users, Safer speeds the one day event will look at how fatalities and seriously injured casualties can be reduced by interventions, integration and understanding of a Safe Systems Approach. The event will be held at the Colessio Hotel, Spittal Street, Stirling FK8 1DU.
Texas toll road opening in 2018

Work on the 360 Tollway in the US State of Texas should be complete in 2018. The link measures 15.5km long and runs between US287 and Camp Wisdom Road. The project is expected to have cost US$340 million once the work has been fully completed. Building work for the route commence in 2015 and the new link is intended to reduce traffic congestion in the Arlington area, lowering journey times for drivers.
Abu Dhabi deal for Italian firm

Italian contractor Salini Impregilo is to carry out a major road construction project in Abu Dhabi. The new road link will connect two of the islands forming part of Abu Dhabi, with the work expected to be complete by 2020. The project is worth US$200 million in all and Salini Impregilo will carry out both the design and building portions of the work involved.
