The authorities in Poland plan to expand the country’s road network by a total of 3,268km by 2025. The Polish national road authority GDDKiA says that this plan is likely to cost some €31.61 billion. The road development plan will run until 2025 as part of Poland’s National Road Construction Programme. The road development work includes adding 252.2km of highways, 2,641km of dual carriageways and over 369km of ring roads. Financing is being sought in Indonesia for a series of major infrastructure projects. In all the work is expected to require US$9.59 billion and is for six highway projects, with one in Kalimantan and five in Java. The project in Kalimantan is for the Bontang-Samarinda Highway. In Java the highway projects are for links from Cileunyi-Tasikmalaya-Cilacap stretching 183km, Bawen-Yogyakarta, Kamal-Balaraja-Teluknaga stretching 48.3km, Semanan-Balaraja stretching 31.7km and Semarang-Demak.

Major highway and bridge projects are commencing in China. Work is starting on a highway project at Baise city in Guangxi Province as well as on the Malantun section of the Xintai-Tai'erzhuang highway in Shandong Province. The Baise city project is being carried out by the CEEG Gezhouba Group and the deal is worth some US$3.94 billion. Work is now underway in China to build a new highway from Wuhan-Ezhou. The project is expected to cost US$.129 billion and is due for completion in 2020. The new highway will measure 34.3km long and will feature up to three lanes in either direction, as well as 14 bridges. The work is being carried out by the contractor Wuhan Municipal Construction Group.

Thailand’s poor road safety standards are once more being highighted, following a spate of road deaths during the recent holiday period. By the fourth day of Thailand’s one-week New Year’s holiday travel period, the country had already seen 239 road deaths from 2,308 crashes. There were also around 2,500 people injured in crashes in this time. The highest road death tolls during the period were seen in Ubon Ratchathani and Si Sa Ket. The New Zealand Government is setting out plans to try to boost road safety during 2018. This follows a disappointing safety record on the country’s roads in 2017. There were 380 people killed on New Zealand’s road network during 2017, the highest figure since 2009. In a bid to boost safety, the New Zealand Government has set a budget of US$16.5 million (NZ$22.5 million) to tackle safety issues on the stretches of rural roads identified as having the highest risk to users.

The eastern Chinese city of Jinan has opened a 1km solar roadway section of an expressway, according to the government’s Xinhua news agency. However, only four days after the road section was opened, thieves stole a small section of the panels that cover nearly 5,900m². Construction is now commencing on Norway’s Rogfast tunnel mega-project on the E39 route between Bergen and Stavanger. The project will cost around €1.8 billion to construct according to some estimates. Taiwan’s road safety is a focus for concern, given the high number of crashes on the country’s network. The National Road Traffic Safety Commission of Taiwan has estimated that there were over 400,000 deaths and serious injuries on the country’s road network in 2017. This compares with a figure of 375,000 for 2013.
