The authorities in Laos are planning a massive road and highway improvement programme. This new strategy from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport calls for a total of 1,151 road improvement projects, which will receive government investment worth US$14 billion.

Work is progressing on-track on Sri Lanka's Southern Expressway project. This will be the country's first expressway and is expected to be completed by 2012, removing the bulk of traffic from the existing coastal road that is highly congested and also has serious safety issues.

Funding from Japan is helping speed construction of a new bypass in Kenya. The US$190 million grant from the Japanese International Corporation Agency (Jica) will be used for the project to build the 17.5km Southern bypass for the South Coast of Mombasa.
