The hydrogen excavator conversions mark the first application of Zepp's fuel cell systems in the construction equipment industry.

The two excavators, both owned by Dutch contracting company Jos Scholman, have undergone six months of successful operational testing.

Conversion specialist Terberg Techniek, based in IJsselstein, Netherlands, developed the conversion kit surrounding Zepp’s fuel cell systems. Use of this kit is not limited to this type of excavator; Terberg Techniek also plans to use it to convert other construction equipment from a diesel to a hydrogen-electric powertrain.

A Dutch maker of valves, couplings and flow regulators claims it has developed what it calls a “sustainable 700-bar filling technique” for hydrogen cars. The company, Teesing, says its PusH project successfully filled cylinders fast and efficiently with hydrogen at 700 bar. The system runs at 700 bar because hydrogen has a lower energy content than natural gas, which means that the same volume contains three times less energy. Refuelling hydrogen at a higher pressure, 700 bar, supplies enough energ

The evolution of the diesel engine continues as ever more sophisticated technologies come into use - Mike Woof writes A major focus for diesel engine suppliers is for the development of low emission technologies. Tough regulations are in force in North America and Europe with regard to emissions, a programme introduced to help reduce pollution from off-highway machines. These technologies are also being introduced in stages in other territories, with China now rolling out tougher regulations.
