Paver hire business MAC Surfacing, based at Tipton in the England’s West Midlands, has chosen two new Volvo wheeled P6870C pavers for its hire fleet.

Established back in 2004 as a paver hire business, MAC started with mini pavers. It is now a nationwide hirer offering pavers, planers, transport and other equipment along with labour. The latest 2394 Volvo P6870C machines bring the total number to 20.

The P6870C is powered by a Volvo D6 Stage IIIB compliant 130kW engine and at its heart features the EPM II – an Electronic Paver Management system. This EPM incorporates a ‘Settings Management’ system allowing the operator to store up to 12 parameter settings for the major functions such as screed temperature, tamping & vibrating, conveyor and auger and paving speeds.

The machine also has Smart Power offering optimum power as well as 6x6 Smart Drive technology for continuous independent traction control over all six wheels. Even on the most difficult bases, tractive forces are automatically adjusted according to the weight of material in the machine’s 12tonne capacity hopper.

The machine has a high degree of manoeuvrability thanks to the Active Steering feature with an inside turning radius of just 2.5m.

The P6870C has a variable screed width of between 2.5m and 5m in standard configuration but can be fitted with extensions for a generous width of 9m. The machine has a theoretical output of up to 700tonnes per hour at varying screed widths and depths.

With both machines engaged on long term hires to surfacing contractors, operator comfort and user friendliness was another important factor in MAC Surfacing’s purchasing decision, said MAC sales manager Mark Hibbert. The steering wheel can be placed in positions around the EPM II control panel.

The rigid all-weather roof with fibreglass extensions was ordered with the optional hydraulically operated lowering system. For night work, the machine has Xenon and additional LED lighting. Emergency stop buttons for the engine have been installed on both sides of the hopper.
