In France a rally driver committed a major sin against French culture when he crashed his car during a race. The driver lost control of the racing car and smashed through a vineyard as he was attempting a rally stage in France’s Alsace region. After ripping its way through the carefully tended vines the car came to a sudden halt when it rammed into a telegraph pole, which collapsed amidst a shower of sparks. The race was halted temporarily until the downed phone lines could be isolated and removed from the roadway. Fortunately, the driver, his co-driver and the nearby spectators all avoided injury although the vineyard was less lucky and will see a car-sized hole driven through its production output.

The driver of a construction truck in the Russian city of Voronezh recently had an unwelcome surprise when his own vehicle became the centre for a major road repair. The mixer truck was being driven along the road to a construction site when it suddenly fell into a large hole in the roadway. No ordinary pothole, this was sufficiently large for the rear of the vehicle to tumble inside, leaving only the cab poking out. The driver managed to jump out and was unhurt. The truck was less fortunate however as the

While Finland’s major roads have wildlife fences along their length to prevent animals from straying into the roadway, this is not the case for minor links in rural areas. Concerns over the high number of crashes involving reindeer have prompted the Finnish Reindeer Herders’ Association to take action. The animals will now be sprayed with a harmless but effective reflective paint so that vehicle drivers will be able to see the animals at night and take avoiding action. The animals frequently stray into the

In New York, a pilot and his two passengers had a lucky escape when the engine of their light aircraft failed. And road construction workers played a key role in ensuring that there were no casualties in the incident. When the road crew spotted the Piper Cherokee gliding in, dead stick, towards the Major Deegan Expressway they realised what was about to happen and parked their vehicles so as to halt traffic on the busy roadway. The rapid descent meant that the pilot brought the aircraft down hard onto the s
