Topcon’s asphalt logistics solution

Topcon says that its new Pavelink system offers efficient logistics for asphalt supplies from the plant to the paving operation. Each truck load from the plant is weighed, with data showing the type of mix and also the estimated time of arrival at the paving site.

A spokesperson for the firm said, “The crew on the machine can see what trucks are coming and when they’ll arrive.”

Sensors are installed on the paver and are mounted on the hopper and at the augers feeding the screed, showing the temperature of the mix as it goes through the machine. The combination of temparature sensors and location technology provides an accurate picture of the temperature gradient of the
mat as it is paved, showing any heat segregation and recording the data in the cloud for future use.

The system is of particular importance for warm mix applications, where the temperature window can be more critical. It allows the paving crew to make informed decisions and the compactor operators can prioritise areas needing attention first for example.

Data on the compaction carried out is also recorded from each of the rollers, with the system providing a comprehensive picture of what work was carried out, and when, recording quantities of materials used for each layer, as well as temperatures.

US and European asphalt paving needs are different, but some firms are bridging that gap, reports Mike Woof. With a clear differentiation between the US and European asphalt paving markets, manufacturers from the latter are now developing machines aimed at the former. The US and European markets for paving machines have developed along very different lines. North American pavers are designed for high throughputs and high paving rates, having been designed to meet a need to build roads over long distances wi

The use of a material feeder in a road paving job in South Africa has helped increase productivity and quality on the project. The contractor employed a Vögele MT 3000-2 Offset PowerFeeder to help optimise pavement quality, with the positive paving results having been confirmed by the University of Twente, Netherlands. This body monitored the project from a scientific perspective and its equipment included RoadScan, the innovative temperature-measurement system from Vögele. Using a material feeder can

Efficient night-time paving operations can reduce construction costs and cut traffic delays - *Todd Mansell writes As roads become more congested, the user cost of daytime lane closures to accommodate road construction and paving has increased dramatically. One solution to lower user costs associated with traffic delays is to carry out more paving at night during off-peak times. However night-time paving brings new challenges to producing quality work in safely.
