Tempting biscuits

The authorities in Brussels have proposed handing out biscuits to drivers who stick to speed limits. This novel ploy has been suggested in a bid to tempt drivers in the Belgian capital from speeding and reduce accident levels. While Belgium borders with the Netherlands, its road accident rate is significantly higher.

    Latest statistics show road fatalities fell in the European Union by 11% in 2010 compared with the previous year. Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Spain, Luxembourg, Sweden, France and Slovenia have all made reductions of more than 50% in the number of deaths on their roads since 2001, says the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC).     A cyclist was recently spotted on the UK’s busy M25 motorway pedalling along the hard shoulder in the wrong direction. Police were alerted by a CCTV operator who saw the rider as he rode past a camera. Officers quickly responded and escorted the cyclist to a place of safety after providing a few words on safety.
