A motorcyclist in the UK city of Newcastle came close to having his bike stolen by persistent and rather stupid thieves. The biker had just entered a main road from a roundabout when he spotted a bicycle lying in the middle of the roadway. Realising it posed a hazard to traffic on the busy road, he pulled to a halt and went back to remove the abandoned bicycle. Meanwhile a youth ran up to his motorcycle, which still had the key in the ignition, and began wheeling it away. The motorcyclist spotted what was happening and confronted the youth, who ran away but when the biker turned back to the abandoned bicycle to move it from the road, another youth jumped over the barrier and attempted to push over the motorbike. Growing frustrated, the biker threw the bicycle at the youth, who also ran away but when he then threw the bicycle over the barrier, one of the youths then threw it back, with a car driver having to swerve to avoid the obstacle. With all these events recorded on video, the biker presented the footage to the police along with very clear images of their faces.

More motorcyclists were killed in guardrail collisions than passengers of any other vehicle type in 2005 (Gabler, 2007). Guardrails cannot simply be removed to protect motorcyclists. Safety and autonomous vehicles exercised the minds of some of Europe’s senior police officers at the recent TISPOL European Traffic Police Network Conference in the UK. Just when European police forces are trying to get back on target, along comes the autonomous vehicle with all its inherent safety issues.
