Spoilt for driving choice in Hidromek’s new 600MG grader

Hidromek’s 600MG grader: Steering wheel or joystick
The driver has choices with the new fully-electronic 600MG grader from Turkish company 230 Hidromek – joystick or steering wheel.

“It comes from listening to our customers,” said Ilhan Varok, chief engineer with Hidromek, which is based in the capital Ankara.

“Because it is fully electronic, we can configure the machine in many, many ways. We can configure it for a customer so the joystick cannot be used over 30kph, as some companies have said their drivers find it difficult to control the machine past that speed.”

If the joystick is chosen and the driver touches, even accidentally, steering wheel, the joystick disengages in favour of the steering wheel.

Power is from a six-cylinder Mercedes-Benz OM 926 engine, stage 3a. A Tier 4f engine is being planned, but the market in Europe is small for such machines. Net power is between 140-160kW at 2200 rpm.

The machine on display is a prototype but deliveries should start by this summer, said Varok.

With the Tier 4 interim/Stage IIIB emissions requirements due next year, further upgrades will be required for all wheeled loaders sold in Europe and North America. In the mean time manufacturers are focussing on improvements that cut cycle times, boost productivity and reduce downtime for example. From Doosan comes the DL420 wheeled loader, which takes over from the previous DL400 and is aimed at use in a range of materials-handling work. The DL420 features a 4m3 bucket and is a 22.3tonne machine that

The alternatives to diesel fuel as a power source continue to grow as firms move to cut emissions - Mike Woof writes. Only the most myopic could have failed to notice that times are changing in terms of engine technology. In the on-highway automotive sector as well as for the off-highway construction machine segment, manufacturers are looking to lower tailpipe emissions. Similar technologies have been employed in both on-highway and off-highway sectors, although those solutions have been adapted to better
