Speeding birds

Police in Germany were amused when they discovered the culprit in a series of mysterious speeding offences in a north German town. The town’s speed cameras had been triggered, but no cars were visible in the photos. The town’s speed cameras had been triggered, but no cars were visible in the photos. However the mystery was solved when a parakeet was photographed clearly in one image, flying across the front of a speed camera and triggering the device. The bird is one of several that have nested in the town’s main park and police are aware that it is likely to be a repeat offender, although they do not plan to press charges.

    A British man cut his own car in half as a protest after being fined for having it parked illegally on the road, despite the fact that it was in his own driveway at the time. One wheel of the vehicle had been protruding onto the pavement (sidewalk) by a mere 50mm and the car had been registered by its owner as being off-road, without the annual license duty being paid.   • French traffic police have new speed cameras fitted to unmarked vehicles

    From 15 March 2013, French traffic police in 13 départements will be using new-generation radar speed cameras. The cameras will be fitted to unmarked vehicles in a bid to catch rogue drivers breaking the speed limit. Said to be designed to pass among vehicles unnoticed, they will photograph the offending vehicles on the move and without attracting attention with a flash.
