348 Traficon is now offering a VIP board that can be used for analysing images from network cameras. The highly sophisticated VIP-IP package connects to IP network cameras that provide MPEG-4 or H.264 video compression and generates streaming video back out, with embedded detection information. It integrates automatic incident detection, traffic data collection, vehicle presence detection, digital recording of pre and post-incident video sequences and streaming video on a single board. The firm has already won orders for this new board also as it is going to be used for the UK Tyne Tunnel project, following a recent contract award by 2361 SPIE WHS, based in Manchester.

A variety of systems are available for quickly and efficiently removing water from roads as Patrick Smith reports. The presence of water in a highway layer reduces the bearing capacity of the road, and in doing so it also reduces the structure's lifetime. Indeed, the recent extremely cold winter in many parts of Europe has shown that in colder climates there is a risk of frost damage when water is present resulting in costly potholes, so drainage systems performing properly are important in road design.

Sick says that its latest TIC502 twin LiDAR sensor system has high all-weather capability between -40OC and +60OC. The TIC502 incorporates vehicle speed detection with 3D profiling and counting of fast-lane, free flowing and static traffic to facilitate toll charge assessment. It can also be integrated with additional 2D LiDAR sensors to count axles for complete traffic profiling and assessment in a single system, according to the company that was set up in 1946 by optical engineer Erwin Sick in Waldkir
