In Poland a Santa Claus and his helper had an excessive quantity of seasonal spirit, resulting in a serious sleigh incident. The two were smiling and waving at passersby from their horse-drawn sleigh when the noise of a vehicle horn startled the animal. Santa and his helper were unable to calm the horse, which reared and sent the pair tumbling from the sleigh as it then collided with a wall. Police were quickly on the scene and determined that the daring duo were heavily under the influence of seasonal spirits. They were charged with drunkenness.

How best is it possible to assess the state of concrete in a road pavement, bridge deck or tunnel wall? One of the most reliable ways is to take a core of concrete from the structure to analyse and test in the laboratory. One downside to this method is that doing the test creates weak points in the structure that must then be repaired. Another is that the frequency of such cores cannot be too great – so it is possible that some problem areas will be missed. New technologies from the world of geospatial eng
