Sakai puts rollers on show

Road construction equipment manufacturer Sakai will show off a number of compactors at bauma China, including its vibratory GW750 pneumatic tyre roller (PTR) and SV520 and SV520DF vibratory single drum rollers. The 9tonne GW750, claimed by Sakai to be the world’s first and only vibrator pneumatic tyred roller, offers four amplitude settings to achieve required density, and is powered by an Isuzu DD-4BG1T (Tier 2) engine with a rated power output of 78.8kW at 2,300rpm. Road construction equipment manufacturer 2624 Sakai will show off a number of compactors at bauma China, including its vibratory GW750 pneumatic tyre roller (PTR) and SV520 and SV520DF vibratory single drum rollers.

The 9tonne GW750, claimed by Sakai to be the world’s first and only vibrator pneumatic tyred roller, offers four amplitude settings to achieve required density, and is powered by an 2724 Isuzu DD-4BG1T (Tier 2) engine with a rated power output of 78.8kW at 2,300rpm.

The company says the GW750’s dynamic kneading action produces more uniform compaction from top to bottom of the pavement layer, and the roller offers versatility on large and small projects for tight and dense longitudinal joints, hot mix asphalt (HMA), aggregate base, roller compacted concrete (RCC) and warm and cold mixes.

Indeed, Sakai says has started a new challenge to promote the GW750 in the Middle East 2014, pointing out that “in most of developed countries such as USA, Europe, and Japan, with the advent of the large double-drum vibratory rollers, most of larger PTR in size from 12,000kg to 25,000kg have disappeared from the contractor’s rolling pattern.”

“However, large PTRs are still widely used in the Middle East countries, such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, etc. It looks like the kingdom of PTRs,” says Dr Yuki Tsukimoto of Sakai Heavy Industries.

Sakai recently gave a demonstration of the GW750 for a paving contractor in Qatar working on a highway project, where the two parties discussed the possibility to improve rolling efficiency by reducing the number of rollers as below.

“The technical director of the paving contractor was very happy to hear the good compaction results in the demo and further good reports came from various jobsites and for different types of mixes such as concrete base material (CBM). In addition, one of the biggest advantages for the company was that it now found an answer to the compaction problem for the new Superpave HMA mix being recently introduced from USA into Qatar as well as most of Middle East countries,” says Dr Tsukimoto.

Joining the GW750 on show at bauma China will be the 10.1tonne SV520D and 11.84tonne SV520DF, both powered by Isuzu 4BG1T diesel engines with a rated output of 83.3kW at 2,100rpm.

The SV520 series are for use on medium to large soil compaction jobs, and include Sakai’s new Eco compaction mode (ECM), which is said gto reduce fuel consumption by up to 20% while maintaining compactive performance.
