A sophisticated, low emissions Ammann asphalt plant is supplying mix for a project in Slovakia

The R2 route in Slovakia is being constructed by the Austrian contractor STRABAG, which opted to use a new Ammann ABA 160 UniBatch Asphalt-Mixing Plant located at Kalinovo. The modern plant combines productivity with low energy technology, as well as minimal emissions.

The environmental aspect was a priority due to the close proximity to the Low Tatras National Par. The Ammann ABA 160 UniBatch has been fitted with additions for agents, fibre and cold recycling so that the user can deliver the correct mix for each application. The volumes and additions can be controlled accurately using the latest version of Ammann’s propietary as1 Control System.

Covered metering devices protect the aggregates from moisture, saving fuel for drying. By housing the bucket conveyor, the bitumen vapour is exhausted and supplied to the afterburning system. This prevents odour pollution for residents and results in low exhaust values.

The Kalinovo location had previously been running an old Teltomat 5 plant that was no longer in line with current requirements. The Ammann ABA 160 UniBatch is a modern plant and up to 40% reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) can be added to production, saving resources and reducing emissions.

During installation, attention was paid to routine maintenance. Large pedestals offer convenient access to all standard control and operating points. A majority of the routine is already handled by the Ammlub lubrication system. Installed at the maintenance point, the intelligent system triggers automatic bearing lubrication – at short intervals and without interrupting operations. The actual benefit is the reduced maintenance effort. Continuous component lubrication prevents downtime, in turn increasing the plant’s operational reliability. Over 60,000tonnes of asphalt were produced at the plant between the time it was commissioned in April 2021 and the end of the year. A similar utilisation is planned for 2022.

Despite these high volumes, the new filter technology helps to deliver energy savings and also reduce emissions.

Asphalt plant manufacturers agree that recycled asphalt is a valuable resource that is too good to waste - Mike Woof writes. Around the globe there is growing interest in the use of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP). The technology to utilise RAP in asphalt mixes has been available for some time, with a range of asphalt plant manufacturers in the US and Europe having developed a number of solutions. However, take-up of this technology has varied, with the US pushing ahead with the use of RAP while progress ha
