New European standard introduces ROPS for rotating telehandlers

A brand new European standard, expected later this year, will introduce ROPS, or roll over protection, for the cabs of rotating telehanders. A brand new European standard, expected later this year, will introduce ROPS, or roll over protection, for the cabs of rotating telehanders. EN1459 part 2 will join Part 1 of the standard which refers to fixed telehandlers. “At the moment, rotating telehandlers have to comply with EN1300 which is the crane standard,” explained Riccardo 7308 Magni, president of Magni Telescopic Handlers, whose technical manager Daniele Felicani is contributing to the development of the new standard. “Our machine already complies, as it has ROPS, although not all machines in the market do.” One of the core values of the Magni brand, which launched in 2012 and last year turned over Euro 31m, is to manufacture equipment with a high level of built-in safety. Another is to increase ease of operation and comfort for the operator with features such as touch-screen operation and fully air–conditioned cabs. “In Europe we find that the drivers often choose the machine, so we want him to feel good inside our cabs so that we are his preferred choice,” says Magni.

Demolition is a highly specialised business, as the machinery required to carry out the work on high-rise demolition contracts can be very site specific. Today's high reach demolition rig is no longer simply a tracked excavator with a long boom, indeed some machines cannot be used as excavators at all. Likewise a machine that is dedicated to carrying a 2.5 or 3tonne shear or hammer will need to be built to take the stresses and strains of demolition life.
