Doosan DA40-5 ADT
A new DA40-5 Stage IV compliant articulated dump truck (ADT) is now part of three generations of Doosan machines being used at quarrying operations of Humberside Aggregates in northern England.

The new 695 Doosan ADT is working alongside four Doosan crawler excavators at North Cave in East Yorkshire. The other machines are a DX530LC-3, DX420LC-3, DX300LC-3 and DX225LC-3.

There are also seven Doosan wheeled loaders, including DL420-3 and DL450-3 machines and the very latest DL450-5 Stage IV model bought this year. All of the Doosan equipment was supplied by Filtermech Plant Sales based in Wakefield, the authorised Doosan dealer for the area.

“Today our fleet is comprised mainly of Doosan branded machines,” said Alan Simmester, operations director at Humberside Aggregates. “As a forerunner to the current Doosan range, the Mega 500 was still performing well right up to its last day here.”

The North Cave quarry produces two types of sand – an 0/2mm soft sand and an 0/4mm sharp sand mainly used in the concrete industry and three types of stone – 10mm, 20mm and 40mm gravels which are used for decorative applications, pipe bedding and bulk trench fills. All of the sands and gravels have a CE Marking. Humberside Aggregates can also supply Type 1 limestone, crusher run and single-size limestone and much more.

"The new truck works closely with the DX530LC-3 52tonne excavator, which is the main face machine,” explained Simmester. “Like the Doosan DX480LC 48tonne excavator that it replaced, the boom and dipper on the DX530LC-3 have been lengthened to match the quarry face, to give a consistent mix of material which is loaded into the DA40-5 and our other trucks and transferred for stockpiling before being loaded into our washing and processing plant by the Doosan wheeled loaders, which are equipped with load meters to ensure that trucks are filled correctly.”

The best-in-class fuel consumption of the Doosan DA40-5 is down to a combination of features including the new Scania DC13 368kW diesel engine, meeting the Stage IV/Tier 4 Final emissions regulations.

Meanwhile, RJB Civil Engineering, in the northern English county of Lancashire, has purchased the first Doosan wheeled excavator and trailer in the UK. The combination was bought from Norwest Plant, the authorised Doosan and Bobcat dealer for north-west England and northern Wales.

It comprises a new Doosan DX160W-5 Stage IV compliant 16tonne wheeled excavator and a modified Bigab hook lift trailer. The blade on the DX160W-5 was modified to allow the trailer coupling to be mounted, with additional hydraulic circuits and controls in the cab fitted by Norwest Plant to allow for the trailer brakes and trailer tipping.

The excavator and wheeled loader segments represent massive sales volumes for manufacturers, so new model development is prioritised - Mike Woof writes. The crawler excavator segment accounts for a substantial portion of total sales of construction machines. With this in mind, it is no surprise that this is a market segment for which manufacturers prioritise a significant proportion of their research and development budgets.
