New asphalt grade from Aggregate Industries

Aggregate Industries is offering an acid-resistant asphalt for use in arduous environments.

Aggregate Industries has developed a special asphalt grade for use in difficult environments

The Super Protect range, which includes Super Protect Plant and Super Protect Stock, is a hot rolled asphalt surface course. Made using high-quality binder and hard rock aggregates, the material consists of a highly dense mixture with low voids, specifically designed to ensure that chemicals such as acids cannot easily penetrate the asphalt and attack the stable mix.

This durable asphalt is said to suit use in environments consistently exposed to aggressive chemical attack. This includes farm tracks and access roads as well as all areas in chemicals plants exposed to acidic liquids and other wastes.

When compared against standard bituminous materials, Super Protect offers good impermeability characteristics, preventing degradation caused by water and chemical ingress. The material is also said to provide good workability, with improved compaction and jointing properties. It can be laid on a suitable binder course or as an overlay to an existing concrete surface. The firm says that the Super Protect range is usable within 24 hours and manufactured to meet the product standard BS EN 13108, Part 4: Hot Rolled Asphalt.

The product has a high proportion of coarse aggregates in the mixture to provide good deformation resistance. As a low maintenance material, it can be easily cleaned.

This adhesive capacity of the asphalt mix can be measured in the laboratory through qualitative or quantitative tests. The result of this analysis should be used as a reference for the improvement of the mix. In the laboratory this can be achieved using additives while at the plant it can be achieved using differing mixer technology an

Manufacturers are producing innovative asphalt equipment, and operators are benefiting from this as Patrick Smithreports. Asphalt plant manufacturers and operators are understandably placing great emphasis on higher productivity but with lower costs. At the same time they are aware of environmental issues and the ever-increasing use of recycled material in mixes.
