More efficient cab, better handling for Hyundai HX/HW excavators

Hyundai’s new HX and HW excavator series have a new and larger 20cm touchscreen monitor. The cluster monitor displays information that mirrors what you would see on your smart phone and is 30% larger than previous models. The main view of the screen can be adjusted to the driver’s preference. It can be controlled via touch control and/or new haptic controller. HX145 LCR crawler excavator: high operator comfort
236 Hyundai’s new HX and HW excavator series have a new and larger 20cm touchscreen monitor. The cluster monitor displays information that mirrors what you would see on your smart phone and is 30% larger than previous models.

The main view of the screen can be adjusted to the driver’s preference. It can be controlled via touch control and/or new haptic controller. Connecting to a mobile phone is with the bluetooth connection to the machine’s radio.

The HW140 and HW210 are Hyundai’s first ever wheeled excavators, while the HX145 LCR is the South Korean manufacturer’s short tail crawler excavator.

Both the HX and HW ranges are fitted with an ECO Gauge which enables the economic operation of the machines. The gauge level and colour displays engine torque and fuel efficiency level on the touchscreen monitor. The gauge indicates fuel information such as average consumption and total amount consumed.  Fuel consumption can be reduced from 6% to 12% - depending on the type of operation – in comparison to Hyundai’s 9A series of machines.

Hourly and daily based fuel consumption can be checked and detailed, too, which helps the operator run the machine more efficiently.

The HX and HW series of excavators have a function that turns the machine off when it enters an ‘idling’ state which also minimises unnecessary fuel consumption and emissions.  Operators can select operating mode and ‘idling’ time depending on work environments.

The IPC (Intelligent Power Control) controls power depending on work environments. Its mode can be selected and released on the monitor, on the excavation mode. Pump flow can be more cleverly controlled to help reduce fuel consumption.

The new Electronic Fan Clutch offers the highest in control efficiency and the best in fuel efficiency. There is also an Eco Breaker Mode where two hydraulic pump summation is available for breaker operation.

The new machines can offer up to 10 breaker and 10 crusher settings. The boom can float freely by connecting to the cylinder head and/or the rod directly to the tank. A power boost button is available to over-ride floating boom.

Other new options include a ‘Fine Swing Control’ which can be installed to ensure a softer stop of the swing with minimal shock load. A swing lock is an operator-controlled locking mechanism which cuts off swing pilot signal. A ‘Straight Travel Pedal’, also an option, reduces operator fatigue while traveling greater distances. Instead of holding down both right and left pedals the operator holds down only one pedal.

The excavator and wheeled loader segments represent massive sales volumes for manufacturers, so new model development is prioritised - Mike Woof writes. The crawler excavator segment accounts for a substantial portion of total sales of construction machines. With this in mind, it is no surprise that this is a market segment for which manufacturers prioritise a significant proportion of their research and development budgets. Increased performance and more durable construction are key features of new generation excavators – Mike Woof writes. All the major equipment manufacturers are introducing new hydraulic excavators to meet market demand. These machines are offering increased output at the same time as producing lower emission levels and burning less fuel than before. From Caterpillar for instance comes its new 330F, which features a maximum operating weight of 29.75tonnes and is powered by a 178kW Cat C7.1 ACERT diesel that
