A cab driver in the US city of Philadelphia received a welcome surprise from a customer in the shape of a healthy tip. The driver had been talking with his customer during the short journey and admitted he had endured a long day behind the wheel. The kind-hearted customer decided to cheer the driver up, giving him a tip of US$989.

The man was truck his truck along a major highway with the tipper body raised when the vehicle smashed into an overhead gantry containing signage. The driver was speeding in his VW over the same bridge in the city, receiving three penalty points for each separate incident. As he failed to tell the police who was driving at the time of each offence, he was given six additional points on his licence for each one, resulting in the grand total of 99 in all.
