Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA) picks Spanish, Chinese contactors

The Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA) has contracted out two major road projects to Spanish and Chinese companies.

China Hunan Hunda Road & Bridge Construction will build the 111.3km Merkote-Delbo junction-Alaba-Sodo road under a contract worth around US$50 million (€39.12 million).

Completion is within two and a half years.

Spanish joint venture UTE Elsameks Eco Asphalt Ethiopia 35 will handle the 63km Ambo-Welliso project. Completion is due in three years, with funding of around $59 million from the World Bank.

Ethiopia is in the midst of a 10-year $2.4 billion development plan, part of which are ambitious road developments, as World Highways reported in May 2012 in a feature on the north-east African country.

The landlocked nation has convinced a number of international lenders of the viability of its Road Sector Development Programme. The goal is to extend its regional roads network to ensure the country’s 6% or more annual economic growth rate is sustained or increased.

In September, World Highways reported that the Addis Ababa City Roads Authority (AACRA) intends to build 600km of roads in fiscal 2014/2015. This will extend Ethiopia’s road network from 4,671km to 5,275km.
