Epiroc’s Intelligent Protection System on one of the company’s hydraulic breakers

8737 Epiroc is highlighting its innovative Intelligent Protection System (IPS), which is featured on many of the company’s rig-mounted heavy hydraulic breakers.

The patented IPS seamlessly combines Epiroc’s AutoControl and StartSelect functions, and the fully automated system is said to provide simpler, more efficient, and more economical operation.

“AutoControl and StartSelect have been popular features on Epiroc hydraulic breakers for some years,” says Epiroc.

“AutoControl optimises breaker performance by automatically adjusting the piston stroke length. The StartSelect system offers manual switching between two modes: the AutoStart mode enables easy positioning at the beginning of the breaking cycle, and in the AutoStop mode the breaker stops automatically to avoid blank firing at the end of the breaking cycle. Epiroc now takes these features to a higher level.”

IPS ensures that the hydraulic breaker always starts in the AutoStart mode. When the contact pressure between chisel and material increases and AutoControl switches from a short piston stroke to a long piston stroke IPS switches automatically to the AutoStop mode. When the chisel breaks through the material the breaker automatically shuts off and prevents blank firing.

Epiroc HB 2000, HB 2500, HB 3100, HB 3600 and HB 4700 breakers are equipped with IPS, and during 2018 all other heavy hydraulic breakers in Epiroc´s range will incorporate the system.

Epiroc says that its latest premium SB series hydraulic breakers are the only hammers on the market equipped as standard with an integrated channel for water spraying. This integrated water channel means that operators can spray water at the source of dust generation to keep dust levels down. The system improves the working environment, boosts visibility and prevents dust from seeping into the bushings. The SB breakers also reduce noise and vibration. Designed for carriers weighing from 0.7-24tonnes, the

The crawler excavator segment accounts for a substantial portion of total sales of construction machines. With this in mind, it is no surprise that this is a market segment for which manufacturers prioritise a significant proportion of their research and development budgets. Wheeled loaders, while not selling in quite such large numbers as crawler excava
