Designing support systems with NAUE

Geosynthetics manufacturer NAUE is offering a new design software package, said to provide a quick and simple design tool for geogrid stabilised and reinforced working platforms

The correct design of platforms is of importance for the stability and the operational safety on the working platform. NAUE has recognised the need for action and provides a design tool for stabilised and reinforced working platforms with the NAUE Platform software. On the basis of scientific research using large-scale model testing, a holistic design approach for Secugrid and Combigrid stabilised and reinforced working platforms has been developed.

The Hybrid model allows the design of working platforms over soft to stiff cohesive subgrades against different potential failure modes. These could, for example, be punching shear failure or rotational and overall failure mechanisms using the so-called Kinematic-Element-Method (KEM). The adapted model can automatically identify the decisive failure mechanism and determine the granular platform thickness to withstand the most critical situation. In addition, deformations, differential settlements as well as tilting of the equipment caused by the operational loads can be estimated by the NAUE Platform software.

The calculation results allow a direct comparison between Secugrid and Combigrid stabilised and reinforced granular working platforms and the conventional construction method without geosynthetics.

Mexico will benefit from an important new underwater tunnel - Mauro Nogarin writes. The city of Coatzacoalcos is located at the mouth of the river of the same name, in the Gulf of Mexico, 302km from the city of Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, in the east end of trans-isthmian corridor and at the southern end of Veracruz State. The city is seeing a key development as currently construction is 85% completed on the first immersed tube, underwater tunnel in Latin America. The reasons why experts chose this type of tunne

Geosynthetic materials are increasing its significance in many applications in the civil and underground engineering. One of such application is in foundation stabilization for roads. A life cycle assessment (LCA) study on behalf of the European Association for Geosynthetic Manufacturers (EAGM)1 has re-vealed that the use of geosynthetic materials will contribute for sustainable highways. In road construction the sub-base needs to meet defined requirements for compaction and bearing ca-pacity. Improveme

Asphalt plant producer Ciber discusses asphalt mix properties The basic quality criterion of an asphalt mix is its adhesiveness; the adhesion capacity among materials. This adhesive capacity of the asphalt mix can be measured in the laboratory through qualitative or quantitative tests. The result of this analysis should be used as a reference for the improvement of the mix. In the laboratory this can be achieved using additives while at the plant it can be achieved using differing mixer technology an
