In China an irate man used a wheeled loader with which to display his anger, forcing police to intervene. The man had recently found a job driving the wheeled loader following a period of unemployment. While out of work, the man had fallen out of favour with his in-laws, his father-in-law particularly so. While trying to make amends with his father-in-law and his, by now, estranged wife and children, the man became involved in a heated argument. In a display of anger, he then drove the wheeled loader at his father in law’s home, demolishing it in the process. However, the man’s two small children and his estranged wife were in the building at the time, requiring them to flee from the structure as it collapsed. Fortunately, those in the building were unhurt during the rampage. A neighbour’s house, a 200m stretch of road and a religious shrine were also damaged during the incident. The home may be rebuilt but it seems unlikely that the man will be able to repair relations with his in-laws.

The driver of a construction truck in the Russian city of Voronezh recently had an unwelcome surprise when his own vehicle became the centre for a major road repair. The mixer truck was being driven along the road to a construction site when it suddenly fell into a large hole in the roadway. No ordinary pothole, this was sufficiently large for the rear of the vehicle to tumble inside, leaving only the cab poking out. The driver managed to jump out and was unhurt. The truck was less fortunate however as the

Michel Démarre gives some historical insights into public-private partnerships conceived to implement urban infrastructure projects, a concept that surprisingly dates back to as early as the 13th century! All over the world today, the role of public authorities in the process of planning and, in most cases, designing, financing and procuring urban roads is paramount.
