2254 Dana has announced that its Spicer Smart Suite Intelligent Load Monitoring System (ILMS) is now available to equipment manufacturers for pre-production testing. Unveiled at the CONEXPO-CON/AGG show, ILMS is designed for use in telescopic handlers, to alert the operator to potential tip-over incidents.

Smart Suite integrates the various driveline components with electronic sensors, to warn the operator when the machine becomes unstable. Dana is currently testing a range of functions, including a stability overview display screen that shows the centre of gravity of the machine on uneven terrain. The system also records axle pitch and roll and the effect that this has on telehandler stability.

“Interest in advanced operating intelligence is growing rapidly among equipment manufacturers. Vehicle owners are looking for robust metrics and analytics to improve safety and performance,” said Aziz Aghili, president of Dana Off-Highway Drive and Motion Technologies.

Merlo’s new monitoring system is designed to stop telescopic boom equipment from tipping over sideways. The system has won one of the show’s top awards for new thinking and is designed to stop lateral overturns to the side of the machine. Merlo has developed a visual display which looks down on the machine from above in real time, showing how the centre of gravity constantly moves about inside a defined triangular-shaped envelope displayed on an in-cab screen. The monitor evaluates the overall stability of
