“Our challenge was to go from a four-tyre to a two-tyre axle system, and give the OEM an option to provide different size wheel and tyre packages for its customers,” said Len Hensel, GKN Land Systems’ chief engineer for wheels in the Americas.

“The development of higher load capacity hub systems for this application led to the creation of a solution in just a few months,” he said. “We used a 425mm bolt circle pattern on a 165mm diameter heat-treated spindle, which allows a higher axle load rating – typically 25.8tonnes. With an M22 fastener, the customer can fit 29.5 R25 or 875/65 R29 wheel and tyre packages.”
